What to do next

If you’ve experienced damage to your property, it’s important to take the right steps as soon as possible to minimise further loss and ensure you are prepared for the coming weeks and, in some cases, months.

Here’s a simple guide to follow to help you during this period:

  1. Secure the property
Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, such as boarding up windows or turning off water and gas supplies. If you intend to make an insurance claim, avoid making permanent repairs until your insurer has had a chance to assess the situation.
  2. Call your insurer
If the damage is significant, contact your insurance provider to report it and initiate a claim. Make sure to provide them with all the necessary information, such as the cause and severity of the damage and any immediate actions you had take (i.e emergency works, like boarding-up), to make your property safe.
  3. Take photos & videos to document the damage
Capture clear photos and/or videos of the damage from different angles. These will help support your claim. It’s also a good idea to make a list of affected items, as this will make the claims process smoother.
  4. Secure long-term alternative accommodation/business premises, if necessary
If the incident was at your home and it is is no longer habitable, your insurance policy should cover the cost of alternative accommodation. Make sure to discuss this with your insurer, and arrange for a safe place to stay while repairs are made. If the incident ocurred at your business premises, your insurance might cover the cost to conduct your business elsewhere, you will need to check with your insurer or broker if this is coverd in your policy.
  5. Note meter readings
Record your gas, water, and electricity meter readings. This information can be vital when dealing with utilities.
